Port Freight Hinterland Data from The GB Freight Model

Client: Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (with Mott Macdonald)
Date: 2021-2022
Summary: Supply data on freight traffic to/from Port of Liverpool

The Questions

• What is the inland O-D of the Port of Liverpool’s traffic?
• Which inland modes of transport are used?

The Solution

• Provided an O-D matrix from the GB Freight Model for freight flows by mode (LoLo, RoRo and bulk)
• Assigned the freight flows to the networks
• Provided the equivalent data for competitor ports
• Provided analysis of the potential for additional intermodal rail freight services

Outcomes

• Outputs from the GB Freight Model incorporated into the Liverpool City Region Transport Model
• Data provided a baseline for the Combined Authority’s own work on the potential for modal switch from road to rail
